R. Gopalakrishnan is the author of five best-selling books, beginning with The Case of the Bonsai Manager. He has been a professional manager for fifty years with a wealth of practical experience: thirty-one years at Hindustan Lever and thereafter in Tata. He has lived and worked in India, the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia, and has travelled extensively all over the world. He studied physics at Kolkata and engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. He has attended the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School. He has served as chairman of Unilever Arabia, managing director of Brooke Bond Lipton India, vice-chiarman of Hindustan Lever and executive director, Tata Sons. He has also been president of the All India Management Association.
