9780143113560: Thursday Next: First Among Sequels (Thursday Next Novels (Penguin Books))

Fourteen years after Thursday Next pegged out at Superhoop '88, her Jurisfiction job has been downgraded due to a potential conflict of interest, since her previous adventures are now themselves in print. Thursday's time is spent worrying about her teenage son Friday and tutoring new recruits. This being fiction, however, jeopardy is never far away. Sherlock Holmes is killed at the Rheinbach falls and his series is stopped in its tracks. Before this can be righted, Miss Marple dies in a narratively inexplicable car accident, bringing her series also to a close. Thursday, receiving a death-threat clearly intended for her written self, realises what is going on - there is a serial killer is loose in the Bookworld. Meanwhile, Goliath have perfected a 22-seater Prose Portal Luxury Coach, and plan on taking literary tourists on a holiday to the works of Jane Austen. Thursday alone realises the true intent of Goliath's unwanted incursions into fiction, but she can't fight all these battles on her own. She must team up with the one person she really can't get along with - the written Thursday Next, currently starring in The Great Samuel Pepys Fiasco. But it's no time to be picky. . .

Review:

Praise for Jasper Fforde ( :)

'Fforde is a master entertainer, and a wordsmith of dexterous genius.' ( Scotsman)

A riot of puns, in-jokes and literary allusions that Fforde carries off with aplomb ( Daily Mail)

'Fforde's books are more than just an ingenious idea. They are written with buoyant zest and are tautly plotted. They have empathetic heroes and heroines who nearly make terrible mistakes and suitably dastardly villains who do. They also have more twists and turns than Christie, and are embellished with the rich details of Dickens or Pratchett' ( Independent)

'Fans of the late Douglas Adams, or, even, Monty Python, will feel at home with Fforde' ( Herald)

Book Description:

Everyone's favourite Book World heroine, Thursday Next, is back in Jasper Fforde's new bestseller.

Its not hard to see what this enthusiasm is about. . . . Its easy to be delighted by a writer who loves books so madly. Janet Maslin, The New York Times What keeps this series humming is Ffordes lively engagement with books and the indefatigable woman hes created to defend them. John Freeman, People Richly crammed with jokes, ideas, and action. Brainier silliness is hard to find.
