Hilda Offen was born in Surrey and spent the first part of her life on an entirely self-sufficient small-holding. She studied at Reigate School of Art and then became a freelance illustrator, working for magazines and newspapers. She later took an English degree at University College London. She now writes and illustrates books for children and teaches in colleges. She won the Smarties Prize (young age group) for NICE WORK, LITTLE WOLF! Hilda lives in Sussex.
