PreSchool-Grade 2-- "What's worse than a giraffe with a sore throat? A centipede with blisters." Most of Rayner's 15 jokes (or some variant thereof) will be as familiar to adult readers as this one, but they are right on target for young comics just emerging from the "Guess what. That's what!" stage. Each joke is given a two-page presentation with the punch line on the reverse page so that youngsters can guess at possible responses. That most of these funnies fall into the "last time I heard that one I fell off my dinosaur" category doesn't matter when children are just discovering their sense of humor. Two framed, line-and-watercolor illustrations augment each joke, making the most of each ridiculous situation. Large, clear type ideally suited to beginning readers makes this title the perfect prelude to the wonderful riddle books by Hall and Eisenberg. --Jeanne Marie Clancy, Upper Merion Township Library, King of Prussia, PA
