Martial, like many of the Latin poets, was born in Bibilis, Spain, probably around 38-41 AD. He appears to have lived in Rome for nearly thirty-four years, under the patronage of the great Spaniard Senaca the Younger. He belonged to a class of intellectuals who were in resolute opposition to the emperor Domitian, so many times figures like Cicero, Brutus, and Pompey are used as literary devices against the crazed tyrant. Martial's poems are definitely modeled off of Catullus' epigrams and elegiac verses, although they are different in meaning and theme. These poems are hilarious and audacious, cruel, lewd, charming, spiteful, and creative; and they bring to life the social and political milieu of Rome.

...readers new to Martial will no doubt find the book a useful tool...The translations are very readable and [Williams] has done a good job in reflecting the tone of Martial's Latin. (Christer Henriksen, Uppsala University )
'They're mine, but when a fool like you recites
My poems I resign the author's rights'
Scabrous, affectionate, flattering, cruel, elegiac, playful and endlessly fascinated by human nature, Martial was one of the first poets to celebrate - with mixed feelings - the modern megalopolis. Poor, but averse to regular work, he survived on his wits and by both cultivating the wealthy patrons of first-century Rome and writing his poetry. Concentrating on the epigram (at its most diverse), Martial brought to it a pitch of technical perfection that has never since been rivalled. His work embraces a rich variety of moods, and his targets are as various, including spongers, slaves, doctors, perverts and, above all, the rich.
In this excellent selection the Latin originals are printed alongside James Michie's vigorous translations. This edition also includes notes and an introduction discussing Martial's fascinating life.
