Rupert Brooke was born in 1887 at Rugby where his father was a master at the school and where he was educated. He won a scholarship to King's College, Cambridge and spent five years there as a leader of the university literary world. He began to publish poems in journals in 1909. He joined the RNVR in 1914 and won acclaim for his poem 'The Soldier'. He died of blood-poisoning the following year and is buried on Skyros.
Rupert Brooke had planned to put together a second collection of poetry for the spring of 1915. However he died of blood-poisoning while serving in World War I and this collection was published posthumously in 1915. It includes the celebrated poem "The Old Vicarage, Granchester".
