Selected poems of Hans Magnus Enzensberger translated by Michael Hamburger, Jerome Rothenberg and the author with introduction by Michael Hamburger. This selection draws on Enzensberger's first three published volumes and also includes a number of other poems. The poet is a German - although uniquely cosmopolitan in outlook and range of sympathies - who was shaped by the Second World War and who expresses an awareness of the ideology responsible for that war and the breakdown which followed it. His social and moral criticism owes much to Marxism, yet is free from party allegiance. As direct and accessible as graffiti on a wall, his poems are the most striking to emerge from post-war Germany.
