Kerry and her mum have just moved into a block of flats on a council estate following a family break-up. Unfortunately, Kerry's mum manages to antagonise the local loan shark - Ma Lafferty - straight away. Most people owe Ma Lafferty money so the Laffertys run the estate and no one can touch them. But Kerry's mum sees Tess Lafferty shoplifting and tells the police. From then on Kerry and her mum are the subject of a campaign of terror. Kerry knows the Laffertys are behind it, but her motherwon't be convinced. But when the Laffertys set fire to the flat, Kerry knows she and her mother have to start fighting back. To their surprise they find that they have made friends on the estate - who stand up for them in real danger.
