From the Author

Despite the tyranny of Franco, the tree still stands.
From all over Europe volunteers flocked to Spain to join the ranks of the Republicans in their fight against the Fascists under General Franco. Will Viljoen experiences it all - fierce combat in the mountains, rescuing the wounded at the battle of Jarama and finally desperately seeking shelter as bombers of Franco's ally, Adolf Hitler, destroy the town of Guernica. Yet against all odds, the Freedom Tree growing in the centre of the town, survives: a heartening message, I hope, to young readers fascinated by 20th century events, the theme of human rights and the struggle against tyranny.
