THOUGH SHE NEVER ACTUALLY LIVED AT PORT MELBOURNE, SHE WAS MARRIED TO A SAILRO AND VISITED THE DOCKS FREQUENTLY. INTHIS NOVEL SHE CAPTURES THE IDIOMAND ATMOSPHERE OF WORKING-CLASS LIFE IN THE PORT SO WELL THAT ONE ASSUMES THAT SHE WAS BORN THERE.
