Victory introduces Axel Heyst , a courteous Scandinavian who solved the problem of other people by opting out. He manages a polite relationship with a volcano, a moth-eaten coal company, and the philosophy that detachment is almost a hobby. Then he does the un-Scandinavian thing: he meets Lena ?a traveling show?s ?lady violinist? in distress?and performs a rescue. This is the trouble with good deeds: suddenly you?re not an island, you?re an island with visitors. Enter the visitors. Schomberg , a hotelier who gossips like a broken accordion, spreads a tale that Heyst sits on pirate treasure. The rumor summons a three-man morality play: Mr. Jones (a cadaverous gentleman who treats murder like bridge), Ricardo (his ferretish enthusiast), and Pedro (the silent punctuation mark at the end of a sentence you don?t want to finish). They descend on Samburan , Heyst?s private Eden-with-termite-problems, to liberate a fortune that does not exist. What they find is worse: two people trying to build a small republic of kindness amid the steam and mildew. Conrad threads irony like a garrote. The book is called Victory , but the prizes are mostly interior: the moment when a recluse chooses a person over a principle; the way courage borrows the voice of someone who has been underestimated all her life.
