This undergraduate text distils the wisdom of an experienced teacher and yields, to the mutual advantage of students and their instructors, a sound and stimulating introduction to probability theory. The accent is on its essential role in statistical theory and practice, built on the use of illustrative examples and the solution of problems from typical examination papers. Mathematically-friendly for first and second year undergraduate students, the book is also a reference source for workers in a wide range of disciplines who are aware that even the simpler aspects of probability theory are not simple.

Probability theory and its central role in statistical theory and practice is the main theme of this work which examines combinatronics, empirical distributions and the application of the theory. There is an introduction to probability theory with emphasis on its role in statistical theory and practice. The style of presentation is based on the use of examples and the solution of problems from examination papers and real life. Also included is a section on combinatorics, a discussion of fitting empirical distributions and a treatment of distributions with random parameters. The final three chapters are mainly devoted to applications, including topics in estimation, the sampling of a finite population and methods for the generation of samples from widely encountered distributions (a topic assuming increasing importance with the extensive usage of computer simulation methods).
