This Book Study Facilitator's Guide provides guidelines and insights on conducting a Book Study group or professional development series of sessions to accompany the book Supporting Grade 5-8 Students in Constructing Explanations in Science: The Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning Framework for Talk and Writing.

Current science reform documents and standards argue for the importance of students being able to generate scientific evidence, explain natural phenomena, and participate in science talk and science writing. These critical scientific practices are challenging for students to engage in and for teachers to plan for and implement in class. Engaging in Book Study groups helps teachers to better support their students in these key aspects of science learning. The guide provides participants with an avenue to collaborate with their colleagues to discuss the ideas in the parent book, try the scientific explanation framework (i.e. claim, evidence, and reasoning) with their students, and bring student work and video clips back to discuss and reflect on how to continue to improve their practice.

Why science coaches and trainers will love the Book Study Facilitator's Guide:

  • Supports the development of a collaborative teacher community that shares the common interest of enhancing science instruction for all students.
  • Links the ideas presented in the parent book to classroom practice.
  • Consists of eight 90-minute sessions that align with the chapters of the book and 13 handouts (containing student work and dialogues) to be used in the workshops.
