The programming language POP-11 is similar to the more sophisticated versions of LISP, one of the main AI languages which has a particularly user-friendly syntax and some powerful features. These include dynamic lists, extendable data types, facilities for co-routining and other non-standard control regimes as well as a powerful pattern matcher. This book, the first on POP-11, is intended to teach computer programmers the language, from its basic features through to the exploitation of more sophisticated aspects. It shows how to use the facilities provided in POP-11, reflecting the steady growth in popularity of the language in industrial and academic institutions, where it is used for expert systems, speech and image processing, compiler design, natural language understanding and generation and so on. The authors provide examples and exercises, some illustrating specific features of POP-11, others covering more substantial tasks. The examples and exercises have been developed within the same PROLOG environment as the text and then transferred directly into it.
