"One of the features I like about the Hauer and Young text is its attempt to bring the values and ethics of the Bible into the contemporary world through discussion questions. The questions are typically open-ended enough that any student can relate to them... and they allow students to realize that not everyone who reads the Bible understands its message in the same way." ― Naomi Steinberg, DePaul University
"The text's three-world approach is a clear and accessible critical methodology for introducing students to the critical study of religious texts .... It balances the critical scholarship well with the more immediate practical and contemporary concerns of the typical undergraduate student. It does not get bogged down in exegesis, but neither does it merely summarize the Bible as others do. It occupies the perfect middle position ...." ― Jeffrey W. Robbins, Lebanon Valley College
A new edition of this book is now available!
The fourth edition of AN INTRODUCTION TO THE BIBLE is now available. It includes new material on the controversial Jesus Seminar, updates on Biblical archaeology, more discussion of new methods of study of the Bible, discussion of the Bible and the environmental crisis, and more. Teachers and students using the book have found it readable, balanced, and up-to-date. In the new edition there are questions for discussion of the contemporary relevance of the Bible linked to particular Biblical readings. It has been used in college classes, church study groups, and by individual readers interested in serious study of the Bible. The authors each have taught courses in Biblical studies at Westminster College in Missouri for several decades. We draw on our classroom experience and our own research interests. Chris Hauer's focus is on the historical world, including the use of social scientific methods in illuminating the Bible. Bill Young's particular interest is the literary study of the Bible. We both would appreciate receiving comments from readers. Thanks for considering the book!
