The aim of this text is to provide a unified discussion of information retrieval, examining both the technical and intellectual issues involved in the applications of various systems. The background, development and current provisions of these systems are explored in detail. The text analyzes recording and capturing, classifying, indexing and searching procedures using examples from commercial and in-house retrieval systems. Alternative approaches for searching are discussed with particular emphasis on boolean and best-match ranking. Systems such as videotex and hypertex, which ask the user to follow links rather than to type key words, are also covered.
