Synopsis

The first German edition of Noth's Uberlieferungsgeschichte des Pentateuch, or "A History of Pentateuchal Traditions," appeared in 1948. Undertaken during the period of World War II, when German scholarship was more or less cut off from the outside world, it has in the years since its publication made a deep impact upon Old Testament studies throughout the world. This work is now recognized as the fundamental study of the history of the Formation of the Pentateuch, one that has far-reaching implications for the history of early Israel and for the understanding of the faith of ancient Israel. The author's new methodology, which goes beyond the mere analysis of literary sources into a study of the formation and transmission of the tradition in the oral period, has aroused much debate and has awakened new interest in the Pentateuch, traditionally known as "the five books of Moses." It is certain that the English edition of Noth's work, now regarded as a "classic" in the field of Old Testament studies, will contribute to the widening of the debate and to a deepening of our understanding of the Israelite tradition.
