While the objective of this Third Edition remains the same as its predecessors―to furnish readers with a basic understanding of the strength and behavior of structural steel members and their interrelationships in simple structural systems ―the text has been both updated and improved for today's audience.

"The chapters on steel detailing and open web steel joists provide more in-depth coverage to these topics than is normally found in such works." ― Thomas M. Burns, Cincinnati State Technical and Community College
"The text can be easily read and understood. It is presented clearly and spaciously." ― John Buttelwerth, Cincinnati State Technical Community College
Applied Structural Steel Design, Fourth Edition, continues to serve readers with a basic understanding of the strength and behavior of structural steel members and their interrelationships in simple structural systems. By providing content that is primarily an elementary, noncalculus, practical approach to the design and analysis of structural steel members, using numerous example problems and a step-by-step solution format, this text has remained true to its reader-friendly tradition. This edition, however, is a transitional text that bridges two methods of design that are currently being used: Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) and Allowable Stress Design (ASD). Most engineering professionals agree that LRFD will become the dominant method in the future. However, since the traditional ASD method remains popular and practical and is still widely used, this text uses the traditional method while devoting entire chapters to the LRFD method.
