This book presents the basics of electrical engineering from the perspective of the primary principles behind the subject, rather than dwelling on superficial details. It is based on three objectives: to explain the fundamental ideas behind electrical engineering, to emphasize the unity of the subject, and to bring an understanding of the subject within the reach of all engineers.

Designed for introductory courses in electrical engineering for students outside the field, this survey of the foundations of electrical engineering discusses principles of circuits, electronics, systems and electromechanics. It emphasizes energy, basic physical laws, analogue and digital representation of information and the time-domain/frequency-domain representation of signals and includes treatment of electromechanics. Familiarity with introductory calculus is assumed, as well as a knowledge of mechanics and electrical physics, but differential equations, complex arithmetic and vector-field expressions are explained when introduced, as are the electrical physics required for the section on electromechanics.
