Synopsis
This work provides an introduction to the more important techniques of error control coding. The subjects are covered through examples and demonstration of the principles in action. The author provides a broad treatment of coding in communications to explain potential benefits without the need for detailed understanding of specific coding schemes; discusses the encoding and decoding of Reed Solomon codes through frequency domain techniques, with examples of decoding for errors only and for errors and erasures; introduces the problems of communication in bandwidth-limited conditions; links the subjects of error detection performance with techniques based on error detection, particularly ARQ; and examines the way in which system constraints influence the choice of a coding scheme.
