Synopsis

This introduction to the field not only discusses the effects of drugs on behaviour but also the various ways that behaviour principles help to form an understanding of both the functions of drugs and why people use them. It reviews the basic principles and concepts of pharmacology, psychology and neurophysiology in order to provide the reader with a background understanding of the subject. The text then proceeds to examine drug classes and details the specific drugs within them. The chapters allow students to compare the various properties of drugs and each class of drugs. Features of this second edition include an enlarged background section with two new chapters on antipsychotics, and antidepressants and antimanics; each analyzing the development, testing and administration of psychotherapeutic drugs. A new chapter examines addiction and drug dependence whilst new chapter summaries and case histories are also provided.
