Synopsis

This broad-based introduction to the most important aspects of concurrent programming developed for use on traditional architecture computers, concentrates on high-level language features and on the underlying techniques of implementation. There has long been a need for a text covering these aspects of concurrent programming techniques, which relates high-level language to low-level machine architecture. Coverage is given to the three basic paradigms of concurrent programming which are currently the object of active research - monitor, message and operation-orientated systems. The use of each of these three paradigms is demonstrated by the development of designs for two systems - a data-logger and a car-park controller. These designs illustrate the relative strengths and weaknesses of the three approaches. A final section considers aspects of system implementations, such as the underlying techniques of process implementation and control, the interface to peripheral devices and hardware interrupts, and finally the programming of distributed systems.
