Designed to meet the need for information on computer-assisted language learning at more advanced learner levels, this book asks two basic questions - can the computer meet this particular need? and what can the computer do that other language learning tools can't? The authors show how existing computer applications (word processors, desktop publishing, databases, hypertext and interactive video) can be used to good effect in advanced foreign language teaching. Existing software is evaluated in terms of its user-friendliness and range of functions and facilities for the language learner. Practical examples from a variety of foreign languages (including EFL) illustrate and clarify the text. The authors also suggest a progression in the way in which computers may be employed over the three or four years of an undergraduate course in foreign languages. At the moment there is relatively little CAL software available which caters for the needs of the advanced learner. This book, in redressing this imbalance should provide a valuable handbook for all those teaching and studying foreign languages.
