Synopsis

The only simulation of its kind on the market, Virtual ChemLab for General Chemistry provides a 3D environment on the computer where students feel as though they are in the experiment. The simulations are designed to teach the cognitive processes behind introductory level laboratories with a focus on the decisions a student should make, not how a student should perform an experiment. Perfect for pre-lab or post-lab assignments. Available in CD or network versions.

From the Back Cover

Virtual ChemLab: General Chemistry Laboratories is a collection of realistic simulations of several general chemistry experiments. In these laboratories, students are put into a virtual environment where they are free to make the choices and decisions that they would confront in an actual instructional laboratory setting and, in turn, experience the resulting consequences. It can be used to replace or supplement a wet lab, for pre-laboratory or post-laboratory activities, or for classroom demonstration and assignments.

The general features of the inorganic simulation include 26 cations that can be added to test tubes in any combination, 11 reagents that can be added to the test tubes in any sequence and any number of times, and necessary laboratory manipulations. This results in excess of 1016 possible outcomes. The simulation uses over 2,500 actual pictures to show the results of reactions and over 220 videos to show the different flame tests.

The purpose of the quantum laboratory is to allow students to explore and better understand the foundational experiments that led to the development of quantum mechanics. A partial list of some of the experiments that can be performed in this laboratory includes Thompson's measurement of the charge to mass ratio of the electron, Rutherford's backscattering experiment, Planck's blackbody radiation, Millikan's oil drop experiment, the photoelectric effect, emission spectra of gases, two slit diffraction, plus many others.
