The European Computer Driving License (ECDL) is an internationally recognised certificate of end-user computing skills. Britain will almost certainly sign up a half million people this year. To qualify for the license, candidates have to pass seven tests of PC knowledge and skill in the common business applications (word-processing, database, spreadsheets, presentations, Internet). The syllabus is set by the ECDL Foundation and applies equally in every country. It is widely used by training organisations to prove the quality of their training, and by employers to set a benchmark for recruitment and promotion.
