9780130205933: Prestressed Concrete: A Fundamental Approach

Synopsis

Created for senior-level undergraduate and graduate Civil Engineering courses.

Completely revised to reflect the new ACI 318 Building Code, this popular text offers a unique approach to examining the design of prestressed concrete members in a logical, step-by- step trial and adjustment procedure. Encouraging clear, systematic thinking, it integrates handy flow charts to better understand the steps needed for design and analysis. Extensive discussions on material properties and concrete performance are provided, as well as an in-depth analysis of prestressing of circular tanks for liquid and gas containment and their prestressed shell roofs.

About the Author

DR. EDWARD G. NAWY is a distinguished profession in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. He has been active in the ACI and PCI since 1949 and is internationally recognized for his extensive work in the fields of reinforced and prestressed concrete, particularly in the areas of crack and deflection control. Dr. Nawy has published in excess of 160 papers in numerous technical journals worldwide and is the author of Reinforced Concrete: A Fundamental Approach, 4th Edition, ©2000, published by Prentice Hall, Fundamentals of High Performance Concrete, 2nd Edition, ©2000, published by John Wiley and Sons, and Concrete Construction Engineering Handbook, ©1998, published by CRC Press. He is the recipient of several major awards, including the Henry L. Kennedy Award of the ACI, honorary professorship, Nanjing Institute of Technology, and is Evaluator for the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). He is licensed Professional Engineer in the States of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, California and Florida, and has been a consultant in structural engineering to agencies throughout the United States.

From the Back Cover

A state-of-the-art book written by a national and international expert on concrete structures and materials, this third edition of Prestressed Concrete reflects the very latest ACI 318-99 Code and the International Building Code, IBC 2000. It puts at the disposal of the user the author's many years of professional and academic know-how in design, construction, and forensic engineering.

This book is different from most because its major topics of material behavior, prestress losses, flexure, shear, torsion, and deflection-camber are sequentially self-contained and can be covered in one semester at the senior and the graduate levels. It uniquely follows procedures given in over 20 flowcharts and 400 illustration that simplify the understanding and application of the subject in design, using both the customary US and the SI units in the examples. Additionally, you will find:

  • A detailed chapter on the design of statically indeterminate prestressed beams and portal frames.
  • A revised chapter containing the latest ACI an AASHTO Provisions on the design of post-tensioned beam anchorage end blocks using the strut-and-tie approach.
  • A revised chapter on slender columns including a simplified load-contour biaxial bending method.
  • A new chapter, with comprehensive design examples on LRFD and Standard design of bridge deck members for flexure, shear and torsion, conforming to the latest AASHTO specifications.
  • A new chapter on seismic design of ductile prestressed concrete frames and shear walls in high seismicity zones conforming to the latest IBC 2000 and ACI 318-99.
  • A comprehensive chapter on the design of prestressed concrete tanks and shell roofs.
