9780128229255: Potato Production Worldwide

Synopsis

Potato is a crop grown on all inhabited continents of the globe. It is included in the top five crops of the world, used as staple food in several countries, and the number of people daily consuming the potato may surpass one billion. Despite the high quantities of seed potato produced worldwide, there are yield gaps due to challenges such as abiotic stresses, pests, climate change and poor production practices. A region-wide critical analysis of yield declining factors can help formulate management strategies that can improve potato yields. Bridging yield gaps in potato will ultimately ensure the role of this crop in securing current and future food security.

Potato Production Worldwide presents information on this global crop from its history, morphology, and taxonomy to the growth and development of the potato crop, including the latest strategies in addressing today’s biotic and abiotic challenges.

This book identifies the reasons for yield gaps in various potato production regions of the world, as well as presenting the best production practices, pest management strategies and approaches to deal with climate change from the perspective of potato production. Chapters provide important insights into potato production cultures and approaches in the major potato production countries. Potato Production Worldwide will be a valuable resource for researchers, scientists and students seeking a comprehensive view of successful potato production.

  • Provides comprehensive information on the origin, history, taxonomy, morphology, ecophysiology, growth and development of the potato
  • Addresses production practices, including irrigation, nutrient management, harvesting and post-harvest techniques
  • Explores the impact of Abiotic stresses (drought, chilling, salinity etc.) and their management

About the Authors

Mehmet Emin Çalışkan has been a professor of agricultural sciences since 2009. He has been a member of The European Association for Potato Research (EAPR) and The Potato Association of America (PAA) since 1997 and has been representative of the EAPR in Turkey since 2006. Additionally he was head of the Agronomy and Physiology section of EAPR during 2008-2104. Potato (production, physiology, and breeding) has been the main focus of his research since the start of his research and academic career. He has more than 100 scientific publications on various aspects of potato research and was an executive of the first project on the Development of National Seed Potato Production System in Turkey. He also advises various companies on seed potato production, cultivar development and Research & Development strategies.

Dr. Allah Bakhsh is an assistant professor in the Department of Agricultural Genetic Engineering, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Technologies, Nigde Omer Halisdemir University, Turkey. He received his PhD in Molecular Biology from National Center of Excellence in Molecular Biology, University of the Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan. Later, he completed his postdoctoral research at Agricultural Biotechnology Division, Department of Field Crops, Faculty of Agriculture, Ankara, Turkey. He received the Early Stage Career Research Fellowship for postdoctoral research at Department of Agricultural Sciences, University of Bologna, Italy. Dr. Bakhsh’s current work is focused on the utilization of modern molecular tools to encode insect resistance trait in Potato and Cotton. He has published over 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals, written 10 book chapters. He is also an academic editor of PLOS ONE and reviewer for more than 10 peer-reviewed international journals.

Dr. Khawar Jabran is actively involved in research, teaching and scientific write-up in the discipline of agriculture. His research work is focused on increasing crop yields through improved crop management practices, and management of abiotic and biotic stresses. Recently he is based in a potato growing region, hence, potato is a major focus of his research work. He has more than 150 publications that include research and review articles in peer reviewed journals, edited books, edited conference proceedings, edited special issues in the international scientific journal, papers in the conference proceeding, book chapters in the edited books and popular articles related to agriculture.
