This comprehensive source-book of cell physiology and membrane biophysics covers the workings of animal and plant cells, including: the structure and function of cell membranes; ion transport; origin of membrane potentials; excitability; structure and function of ion channels and their regulation; synaptic transmission; sensory transduction; muscle contraction, cilia, and flagellae; excitation-contraction coupling; bioluminescence; photosynthesis; metabolism; and signal transduction. The book also contains chemistry and physics reviews, allowing graduate students to gain a full appreciation of how cells work, send signals internally, transduce signals from the environment, and communicate with other cells.
