Synopsis

This work demonstrates how a study of the history of a specific language family can contribute to the development of a theory of diachronic syntax, by providing concrete examples of some of the changes that are possible in natural language, and by providing evidence of intermediate stages of changes that have been completed in some dialects. It confirms the importance of the central grammatical relations 'subject', 'direct object', and 'indirect object', as well as the notion of 'chômeur', in the historical development of language. The reinterpretation of clause structure provides evidence of the relevance of syntactic levels in a diachronic account of grammar.
