It is apparent that archaeologists must adapt concepts, theories, models, and approaches from economics and ecology in order to explain prehistoric subsistence change -- one of the major topics of current research. This books presents several examples of the applications of formal economic approaches and ecological concepts to problems of prehistoric dietary adaptation. Marginal analysis, linear programming, decision theory, niche theory, and optimal diet models are described with reference to various prehistoric situations. The 7 chapters draw on data from different world regions. A final paper gives a bibliographic overview. Explicit models are needed that can be tested archaeologically.
