From the Author

About my book
The World Wide Web (WWW) and its core HyperText Markup Language (HTML) have created a populist computing revolution that few people could have anticipated in the beginning of the 1990s. Those of us who call ourselves Webmasters – people who manage online content and the servers from which it is distributed -- are happy to be a part of it. As the Web’s popularity has grown, however, many Webmasters have been frustrated in their desire to extend its capabilities from a simple presentation system of static text documents to an interactive purveyor of mass media. Compared to what could be produced with any desktop publishing or multimedia authoring application, the presentation qualities of the Web seemed like a major leap backward! The desire to combine the Web’s portability and accessibility with better visual design and functionality has culminated in a group of improved standards and techniques as revolutionary as the introduction of the Web itself. Collectively, these standards and techniques are called Dynamic HTML (DHTML). Unfortunately, the evolution of DHTML has not been a smooth one. Prior to version 4.0, HTML concerned itself with the most basic text formatting and presentation. Its syntax was easy to learn, and one could put together a perfectly functional Web page in minutes using nothing more than a text editor. DHTML, however, requires a shift to a more programming-like methodology that is not so easy to learn and can be difficult to manage without a visual development tool. To make matters worse, DHTML is not one clearly defined standard. There have been variations in the way DHTML is defined by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), an Internet standards organization, and the two most powerful browser developers, Microsoft Corp. and Netscape Communications Corp. This has made it difficult to achieve a universal definition or apply new technologies consistently. All of this confusion is hard enough on the full-time Web developer who scans the annals of Geekdom to stay on the cutting edge of Web innovation. For the average Webmaster who performs the duties on a part-time basis, it can be too much. The knowledge required to work with HTML and to publish content using a Web server is not sufficient to work with DHTML, and most Webmasters have other duties that limit their ability to follow the progress of every new and proposed Web technology. Those Webmasters with some programming knowledge are better off, but almost all must struggle to understand those promising but complex new paradigms. Hence, this book. If you are a busy Webmaster responsible for one or more production servers, it is for you. In it, I attempt to define clearly the core technologies that constitute DHTML. In addition, I provide examples that you can apply right away to your own sites. Unlike some books that seek to teach all the nuances of DHTML on the assumption that their readers will build new Web pages from scratch, I will assume your Web pages are already being published. My goal is to upgrade your knowledge and retrofit your Web sites to take advantage of DHTML without trying to make a programmer out of you. Table of Contents: Chapter 1: HyperText Basics Chapter 2: HyperText Elements Chapter 3: Cascading Style Sheet Basics Chapter 4: Cascading Style Sheets Level 1 Chapter 5: Cascading Style Sheets Level 2 Chapter 6: Scripting Basics Chapter 7: More Scripting with JScript Chapter 8: More Scripting with JavaScript Chapter 9: Examples Abound! Chapter 10: Authoring with Dreamweaver
