This first eleven chapters provide an overview of the pulp and papermaking processes from raw material to finished product. A technical background in not necessary to understand this material. The next nine chapters require familiarity with chemistry, physics, and mathematics to understand topics such as paper chemistry, pulping calculations, leaching, etc. The next 14 chapters form an excellent overall technical reference; they include topics such as surface chemistry, wet end chemistry, graphic arts, optical properties of paper, wood anatomy and characteristics, nonwood pulping materials, process control, and hydraulics. The Handbook of Pulping and Papermaking was written to be a clear, concise introduction to the pulp and paper industry. It is 754 pages in length with an additional 10 pages of color plates containing 58 individual pictures. The second edition replaces "Essentials of Pulping and Papermaking", which has been used at over 8 colleges as an introductory text. The first 20 chapters of the second edition are largely unchanged from the first edition, with only a few clarifications and updates. The work contains numerous annotated bibliographies so that the reader can find more advanced or detailed information very easily. The price is able to be relatively low because the manuscript was prepared in camera-ready form, but the quality is near to that of typeset works.
