"The first 20 chapters of this second edition are virtually unchanged from the first, Essentials of Pulping ad Papermaking (1993). This first eleven chapters provide an overview of the pulp and papermaking processes from raw material to finished product. A technical background in not necessary to understand this material. The next nine chapters require familiarity with chemistry, physics, and mathematics to understand topics such as paper chemistry, pulping calculations, leaching, etc. The next 14 chapters form an excellent overall technical reference; they include topics such as surface chemistry, wet end chemistry, graphic arts, optical properties of paper, wood anatomy and characteristics, nonwood pulping materials, process control, and hydraulics. All chapters are well referenced and contain excellent drawings, photos and/or color plates. Many study problems are included at the end of each chapter. This is the most complete, up-to-date single-volume pulp and paper work known to his reviewer. First edition owners who found only the first 11 chapters useful or accessible will not need the newer edition; those more technically oriented should consider its purchase." --K.I. Mumme, University of Maine, in CHOICE "Overall, the book is orderly, and assembled in a manner that permits the reader to extract what is needed. The combination of information on topics, and the relevant literature cited will provide the student and professional a solid basis for learning what is needed in the given area...The book is valuable in that the concepts are applicable and necessary to the professional or student of recycling. This book will be a key addition to the library of those working in the paper industry." --Jeffrey Dyer in PROGRESS IN PAPER RECYCLING "Whether as a textbook for an introductory/survey course, or as a reference book for the mill process engineer, Essentials of Pulping and Papermaking is a worthwhile addition to the Pulp and Paper Science literature." --WOOD AND FIBER SCIENCEFrom the Author:
A good, thorough introduction with advanced topics.
The Handbook of Pulping and Papermaking was written to be a clear, concise introduction to the pulp and paper industry. It is 754 pages in length with an additional 10 pages of color plates containing 58 individual pictures. The second edition replaces "Essentials of Pulping and Papermaking", which has been used at over 8 colleges as an introductory text. The first 20 chapters of the second edition are largely unchanged from the first edition, with only a few clarifications and updates. The work contains numerous annotated bibliographies so that the reader can find more advanced or detailed information very easily. The price is able to be relatively low because the manuscript was prepared in camera-ready form, but the quality is near to that of typeset works. The work includes chapters or sections on wood processing. pulping, kraft liquor recovery, bleaching of pulp, refining and pulp characterization, paper and its properties, stock preparation and additives for papermaking, paper manufacture, fiber from recycled paper, environmental issues, many aspects of chemistry related to papermaking, various calculations used by the pulp and paper industry with worked examples, polymer and carbohydrate chemistry, total quality management, colloid and surface chemistry, papermaking chemistry, printing and the graphic arts, optical properties of paper, wood and fiber anatomy, hydraulics, process control, corrugated containers, corrosion, and other topics.
