Paperback. Condition: Fair. Alan Villiers, a temporary RNVR commander in World War 2, holder of the D.S.C for gallantry during the normandy landings was born in Melbourne, Australia, where real sailing ships were in dock at the bottom of his street. Ships became his life when at 16 he first went to sea. Before he was 20 he was a member of the famous Norweigan C. A. Larsen's whaling expedition to the Ross Sea in the Antartic. From this voyage he began his other career, writing, when he was asked to produce a book about the epic voyage for an American publisher. Since then Alan Villiers has sailed hundreds of thousands of miles across the seas in many of the most famous of the square-riggers, including his own Joseph Conrad, now a monument to shuch ships in Connecticut in U.S.A. He has written 27 books, mostly on the sea and the oceans, and the ships that sail them, and has broadcast and lectured over the world. For 24 years he was a Trustee of the National Maritime Museum, and was president of the society for Nautical Research for some years. This edition has some fading and wear on the cover. It also includes a message and picture from a previous owner on the first page. Otherwise in good readable condition. 61 pages. Seller Inventory # 1465687
