This report considers the first year of the implementation of music in the National Curriculum. Standards of achievement in Year 1 and 3 were satisfactory or better in four-fifths of the lessons. In Year 7 pupils achieved satisfactory or better standards in over two-thirds of the lessons. The Inspectors found that most of the primary schools responded promptly and generally effectively to the introduction of the National Curriculum Order for music. The response of the secondary schools was less immediate. Overall, schools addressed performing and composing more effectively than listening and appraising.
