Synopsis
This study explores the whole range of musical experience in man's relationship with ships and the sea. From shanties to Debussy's "La Mer", from the ceremony of the bosun's call to the songs the pilgrims sang as they sailed to foreign lands. The book also looks at the cross-play of cultures - how sailors and travellers exchanged musical knowledge and musical instruments with peoples of other lands, bringing new ideas and sounds back home.
