This guidance has been developed by the Faculty of Occupational Medicine on behalf of the Department of Education and Employment. It is aimed at occupational health personnel and is intended to help promote good, consistent practice among those who provide occupational health services for teaching staff and teachers in training. Complementary publications are the DFEE circular 4/99 "Physical and Mental Fitness to teach of Teachers and of Entrants to Initial Teacher Training" and the companion volume "Obtaining Occupational Health Advice on Fitness to Teach".
