Synopsis
Science is a core subject in the national curriculum. This report is based on the inspection of 211 primary schools, 21 middle schools and 251 secondary schools. Visits to schools showed that standards of science work in key stage 1 were similar to the previous year and two-thirds of these lessons were satisfactory or better. The introduction of key stage 2 has broadened pupils' scientific experience by standards of work were less satisfactory than in key stage 2. At key stage 3 the improved standards identified in the previous year were maintained.
