Rear cover reads: This book is the first volume in a series of five intended to succeed Wallace's `Diagnosis of Mineral Deficiencies in Plants by Visual Symptoms'; it presents general principles of plant nutrition, diagnosis and correction or control of mineral disorders. The first chapter describes the role and metabolism of elements known to be essential in the mineral nutrition of plants; it also describes effects of other elements having metabolic significance in other ways or which, like selenium or fluorine, are ecologically or physio­logically significant. In the second chapter the characteristic effects of various mineral disorders on plant growth and compo­sition are described in a general way, although diagnostic features of particular crops are described in special crop volumes two to five. There follows a third chapter on methods of diagnosing nutrient disorders in plants by chemical analysis of the sap, samples of plant parts or by assaying biochemical indicators. The final chapter describes briefly the soil as a natural medium for plant growth, soil analysis for diagnostic purposes, the occurrence in the field of mineral disorders and the practical treatment for their correction and/or control. Volume one is a necessary companion to any one or more of the succeeding special crops volumes in the series and in particular, it is essential for teaching purposes. The book series is directed at crop advisers, well-informed farmers and growers, final year students and graduates concerned with plant nutrition and the production of healthy crops. All the authors are leading scientists with many years of active work in their chosen areas of science.
