Synopsis
This report covers key developments in the EU under the Italian Presidency. Of particular interest are: the establishment of the SLIM (Simpler Legislation for the Internal market) initiative which is designed to look at ways of simplifying and improving the effectiveness of the Single Market legislation; the first ever Asia-Europe Meeting on 1-2 March in Bangkok; the BSE crisis and the Commission's ban on the export of British beef and beef products; and the Unit Pricing Directive, where exemption was secured for small shops from having to display price per unit as well as the actual price for all goods sold by weight or measure.
