His brilliant career began at school in the unlikely role of full-back and fly half, and ended with his reputation firmly established as one of rugby's outstanding lock forwards and one of England's great captains. He has played in many memorable matches in every corner of the world and is not only the most famous English player of recent times but one of the most respected as well. In 1982 the world was stunned by his enforced retirement on medical grounds. His name is Bill Beaumont.
