Review

Blood of the Forest is the fruit of Tim Goodwin's fascination with the far north and his adventures in Canada and Greenland. By setting this compelling thriller in the dense forest of the Arakun Peninsula, Goodwin is able to draw a richly detailed picture of an isolated community, divided by intrigue and hatred. The cash-rich logging companies who are destroying the precious forests are meeting with a mixed response from the townspeople and the death of an academic who has been attempting to save the forest points to a malign conspiracy. Goodwin's protagonist, the tough Inspector Leach, is a street-smart woman from the deep South who is soon up to her neck in the dangerous business of making connections between the murder and the ruthless directors of the logging companies. To further enrich the narrative, Goodwin includes a conservation worker, Mark, who joins Leach as they fight for their lives when a massive storm sweeps across British Columbia, and the labyrinthine tale comes to a satisfying and powerful conclusion. --Barry Forshaw
