Synopsis

When Beverley Nichols left Oxford after World War I, he was described as "the original bright young thing". He was determined to be famous - even great. His school-leaving novel, "Prelude", written about Marlborough, was followed by his autobiography, "Twenty Five" - the latest age, he cheekily said, at which anyone should write one. Despite his hectic social life, he produced many books, revue songs, essays and articles. His successes included children's books, novels, biography, political commentary, plays, an operetta, cabaret numbers and books on gardening, travel and religion. Fame did not elude him, but greatness did, and in his hunger to be taken seriously he tackled many issues. He felt strongly about world events, about anti-Semitism, colour discrimination and religion. In his later years, Beverley was known chiefly for his books on gardening and cats, but he grew increasingly bitter about his "failure" as a serious writer, and about his father whom he hated more savagely as the years passed. "Father Figure", published in 1972, vilified John Nichols and most of the Nichols family, and it has been the task of Bryan Connon to distinguish fact from fiction.

This book is a study of a complex and talented man, whose huge and diverse literary output chronicles the events, moods and personalities of the age he lived in.
