As emigrants, the Scots have been among the most successful in the world, and there is hardly any part of the globe where they have not left their mark on the land or the people. In the C16th and C17th Scots spread throughout Scandanavia and Europe. With the opening of the New World they soon travelled west, sometimes involuntarily as indentured servants, sometimes in positions of power. But it was during the great 'emigration century' from 1775-1875 that successive waves of hardy Scots sailed to developing settlements in USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and India, leaving behind famine and unemployment and looking for a better future. This book recognises the enormous contribution Scots made to the lands where they settled.
