Synopsis

East corner of England -the ancient coastal path front Gravesend to Rye, the Saxon Shore Way, an area of the country with which both Fay Godwin and Alan Sillitoe have strong links. I his book grew out of their discovery of each other's love for Kent and their decision to do a book together about it. The text describes, explains and evokes the variousness of this long-distance walk through a landscape at times lonely and remote, beautiful, and rich in history. It is not a guide book In feeling and method it is reminiscent of the work of Edward Thomas who could also give his readers the intense feeling of what it i; like to be there. Fay Godwin's photographs are as brilliant and witty as we have come to expect from her. She deviates from Alan Sillitoe's route to achieve better vantage points, see local events or nearby, places, and explore the visual variety of the Kentish countryside along and near the coastal path. The result is over one hundred photographs that marvellously complement Alan Sillitoe's superb text.
