Recent Trends in Cold-Formed Steel Construction discusses advancements in an area that has become an important construction material for buildings. The book addresses cutting-edge new technologies and design methods using cold-formed steel as a main structural material, and provides technical guidance on how to design and build sustainable and energy-efficient cold-formed steel buildings.
Part One of the book introduces the codes, specifications, and design methods for cold-formed steel structures, while Part Two provides computational analysis of cold-formed steel structures. Part Three examines the structural performance of cold-formed steel buildings and reviews the thermal performance, acoustic performance, fire protection, floor vibrations, and blast resistance of these buildings, with a final section reviewing innovation and sustainability in cold-formed steel construction.

Dr. Cheng Yu is a professor and program coordinator in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of North Texas, Denton, Texas, USA. He received his BS in Civil Engineering from the Tsinghua University. Both his MS and PhD were earned from the Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Yu’s research interests include thin-walled structures, structural stability, cold-formed steel, and earthquake engineering. Dr. Yu is an active committee member of the American Iron and Steel Institute which developed the North American Cold-Formed Steel Specifications and Standards. Dr Yu’s research has been funded by federal agencies, professional associations, and various industrial sponsors. Dr. Yu is a registered professional engineer in Texas and a Structural Engineering Institute fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Cold-formed steel has become an important construction material for buildings. However, significant efforts are needed to introduce the material and recent advanced construction technologies to the building industry. Recent Trends in Cold-Formed Steel Construction: Design, Analysis and Performance addresses cutting-edge new technologies, design methods, and recent research findings using cold-formed steel as the main structural material in buildings.
Following an introduction to recent trends in cold-formed steel construction, Part One explores codes, specifications and design methods for cold-formed steel structures. Computational tools for elastic buckling analysis and optimization techniques for structural analysis are topics in Part Two. Part Three focuses on the structural performance of cold-formed steel buildings, including thermal and acoustic performance, fire protection, floor vibrations and blast resistance. Finally, Part Four covers innovation and sustainability, concentrating on the sustainable applications of connections and joints, portal frames, and beam, wall and floor systems.
This book provides technical guidance to design and build sustainable and energy-efficient cold-formed steel buildings, including the next generation design method, computational tools and technologies. Suitable for both academia and industry, this book appeals to structural and civil engineers, architects, and materials scientists working in the design and development of cold-formed steel structures.
