Synopsis

The concept of the sequencing batch reactor (SBR), a controlled unsteady-state bioreactor, is not new. However, it is only in recent years that its potential for cost-effective solutions to a wide variety of biological treatment problems has been grasped. The SBR is increasingly recognised as a persuasive option in municipal and industrial waste treatment; its range of application is expanding to take in the biological treatment of hazardous wastes, ranging from low-strength groundwaters and moderate- to high-strength leachates, to contaminated soils. Around 275 leading experts from 33 countries were drawn to Munich to discuss the latest research, developments and full-scale applications of SBRs. From 80 oral and poster presentations 34 articles have been selected, covering research into SBR processes, mathematical modelling and computer simulation, and pilot and full-scale applications to municipal and industrial wastewaters and groundwaters and leachate clean-up. These proceedings constitute an authoritative survey of the state of the art in sequencing batch reactors.
