Based on an extensive use of sources on both sides, this is an analysis of Soviet tactical performance and adaptation in the war in Afghanistan. It describes how the Soviet Army slowly - and painfully - developed an ad hoc counter-insurgency strategy and deployed a uniquely qualified counter-insurgency force, and analyzes in detail the Soviet tactical performance. The author concludes by evaluating the suitability of the Soviet Army for employment in future foreign and domestic counter-insurgency operations.
