The Highlands and Islands Development Board reached its 25th birthday in 1990. The Board has done great work to generate jobs, to improve life, and to help the remoter areas. The book has a wider scope. It considers all aspects of change since 1965 - land use and fish farming, both highly controversial; the culture or cultures of the north, with the coming of television, the threat to Gaelic and the inflow of 'white settlers'; the great oil developments in the north east and a host of other issues. Among these are the growth of tourism and electronic developments, which will let the population deal in world markets from their remote crofts.
