Book Description Aberdeen University Press, 1988. Softcover / Paperback. Book Condition: Very Good. First edition. Softcover. When Scottish doctors prepare a medical report for use in the criminal courts, they must sign it under the traditional oath 'On Soul and Conscience'. This book is the history of one of the most important centres of forensic medicine in Europe - the department of Forensic Medicine and Science at the University of Glasgow. Since 1839, the University has taught the basic techniques of forensic medicine to generations of students in medicine and law; but it is better known to the public through its work in detecting crime. The doctors in this department have been connected with the history. In particular, the name of John Glaister, father and son, is associated with many famous cases, including Oscar Slater, Donald Merrett and Buck Ruxton. The Glaisters dominated forensic medicine in Scotland for over 60yrs. The work of the medical detectives in the heroic period naturally has pride of place in this book; but it also covers the rise of forensic science in Glasgow. In former times, the doctors had to conduct all kinds of forensic examinations, from a post-mortem to the study of fingerprints, poisons, hair and blood. With the development of new techniques in forensic science, it is no longer possible for this work to be undertaken by a few outstanding individuals; instead, it relies on the teamwork of many doctors and scientists. The book draws on a wide range of unpublished sources, including accounts of criminal cases and the personal papers of the two Glaisters. Illus., Notes, Select Bibliog. and Index. 169pp. trade size softcover. From the library of true crime writer, Wilfred Gregg, with his personal b/plate. Sunned sp. and patchy fading to fr. cover. Vg. with no creases. Bookseller Inventory # 17686
