Fundamental Managerial Accounting Concepts 4e by Edmonds/Edmonds/Tsay/Olds focuses on concepts that are isolated and introduced in a logical sequence. The authors intentionally limit the scope of the material to help students build a solid foundation of the most important concepts in managerial accounting.

Fundamental Managerial Accounting Concepts 4e is organized in a distinctive way, particularly in the first six chapters. The objective is to establish a coherent, integrative framework that enables students to build knowledge in stepwise fashion. The authors’ goal is for students to understand the underlying principles of accounting, not just memorize content.

From the Publisher:
Focus on Concepts helps students understand the most important concepts in managerial accounting without loading them down with too much information. The text is truly written for students. The material presented is not intended to introduce students to every aspect of the field but rather to provide a solid foundation for the fundamental concepts of managerial accounting. The philosophy is that the application of accounting concepts to business practice should be the end result rather than the starting point of the educational process.
Distinctive Organization allows for greater emphasis to be placed on decision-making and easier comprehension of concepts. For example, cost behavior and cost/volume/profit analysis are covered before cost accumulation. Important cost terms and concepts are introduced in context where they can be linked with decision-making skills.
Delayed focus on manufacturing cost flow results from the effort to isolate concepts and introduce them in a logical sequence. Understanding the assignment of overhead costs within a manufacturing context requires a comprehension of cost behavior, direct versus indirect costs, and the mechanics of allocation. Therefore, coverage of these topics precedes the introduction of manufacturing cost flow. This also allows the text to focus more on service and not-for-profit entities.
Excel Spreadsheet screenshots will be used as examples for students where applicable. Each chapter includes Working with Excel and Mastering Excel problems. Both problems require students to create spreadsheets from scratch and include screen captures as well as Excel tips to help students.
In addition, McGraw-Hill/Irwin publishes Managerial Accounting using Excel 7.0 by Ali Peyvandi and Nancy Hongola, both of California State University at Fresno (isbn 0072296291). This product enables a professor to easily incorporate spreadsheets into a managerial accounting course using a four-step system:
1. Provides students with a brief introduction to the computer
2. Introduces the student to an Excel spreadsheet and its functions.
3. Students solve managerial accounting problems using Excel templates.
4. Requires students to solve managerial accounting problems by creating a spreadsheet from scratch.
Peyvandi/Hongola can be bundled with FMAC for an additional $15.
Analyze, Think, Communicate - Each chapter concludes with a section of analytical, critical thinking, and communication problems that require critical thinking and interpretation. These include a Business Application Case (drawn from real-world events), a Group Assignment, a Research Assignment (based on current articles), a Writing Assignment, an Ethics Case, and Working with Excel and Mastering Excel problems.
A Look Back/A Look Forward - Each chapter ends with a look back at the main points of the chapter, followed by a preview of the upcoming chapter, with an emphasis on how the concepts build on one another. This approach is yet another example of the focus on key concepts.
Real World Focus - Each chapter begins with 'The Curious Accountant' which poses a thought-provoking question based on the chapter content. These questions involve real accounting issues faced by real companies. Throughout the book, Reality Bytes and Focus on International Issues boxes provide diverse examples of accounting applications. When real-world companies are used in an example, Edmonds uses actual data from the company.
Brief, manageable length proves 'less is more.' This fourteen-chapter textbook reflects the effort to address the information overload problem.
